FridgeRepair.pro is an independent repair service operated by Appliance Repair Pros. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Maytag or Whirlpool Corporation. The Maytag name and logo identify the equipment we repair.

A Maytag bought in the last 15 years or so is a Whirlpool-built refrigerator wearing Maytag styling. One bought before that could have come from a different factory with different parts, so Maytag refrigerator repair depends on which Maytag you own. We see both in Greater Seattle homes, and the first thing we do is identify the era from the model and serial number.
A brand with two histories
Maytag started in Newton, Iowa, and spent most of its life as an independent company famous for washing machines and the lonely-repairman ads. From the early 1980s it grew by buying other appliance makers: Jenn-Air first, then Magic Chef (which brought Admiral with it), and Amana in 2001. Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006, and over the next several years Maytag refrigerators moved onto Whirlpool’s platforms.
So a newer Maytag shares a great deal with a Whirlpool or Amana of the same type. An older one may share parts with Amana-built refrigerators instead. That difference decides which parts we order and how easily they can be found.
What’s distinct about current Maytag refrigerators
Maytag markets its refrigerators on durability and power rather than gadgets. Expect fewer screens and more straightforward controls than on a KitchenAid or JennAir. Some models include a fast-cooling feature Maytag calls PowerCold, which simply drives the cooling system harder after you load groceries. Fingerprint-resistant stainless finishes are common.
The trade-off is that many current Maytag French-door models use the same fresh-food ice compartment design as Whirlpool, with the same sensitivity to door seals and airflow.
Problems we see most on Maytag
Newer, Whirlpool-platform models
- Ice clumping or freezing solid in the fresh-food ice compartment, usually a seal, fan or airflow issue.
- Water on the floor or under the crisper drawers from a blocked drain or a leak at the ice compartment. See our refrigerator leaking water guide.
- A warm fresh-food section from a defrost failure or a stuck damper.
Older Maytag-era models
- Ice maker problems on early French-door models with the ice maker in the fresh-food section, where freeze-ups and leaks around the ice compartment are the usual calls.
- Worn evaporator and condenser fan motors, which are often the noise you are hearing.
- Discontinued trim, bins and control parts. For some older models, a part may only be available as a substitute.
Maytag freezers
Maytag chest and upright freezers are built for storage, not features. Chest freezers are manual defrost and rarely fail outside the compressor, thermostat and lid gasket. Upright frost-free models add defrost parts and a fan. A freezer in a cold garage can stop running if the room is colder than the thermostat expects, so placement is one of the first things we ask about.
Finding your model and serial number
On Maytag refrigerators the label is usually inside the fresh-food compartment on a side wall, either up high or down beside the crisper drawers. Upright freezers have it inside on a side wall; chest freezers often have it on the outside back or an end panel. If you’re weighing repair against replacement, the serial number helps us date the unit. Our Amana page covers the closely related value line.
Maytag appliances we service
Maytag refrigerator repair
Current Maytag refrigerators include French-door, side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer models built on Whirlpool platforms. Older Maytags still in service can come from different factories and use different parts, so the full model number matters.
Maytag freezer repair
Maytag sells chest and upright freezers aimed at garages, basements and bulk storage. They are mechanically simple, and most repairs involve controls, fans, defrost parts on frost-free models or door seals.

Maytag repair FAQ
Is a Maytag refrigerator really just a Whirlpool?
Since Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006, Maytag refrigerators have moved onto Whirlpool platforms, and many share cabinets and parts with Whirlpool and Amana models. Maytag positions its versions around durability, with its own styling, feature choices and warranty terms. Older Maytags built before or just after the merger can be quite different inside, which is why we always work from the exact model number.
My Maytag French door fridge has water under the crisper drawers. What causes that?
The usual causes are a blocked defrost drain, which sends meltwater into the cabinet instead of the drain pan, or a leak from the ice maker compartment in the fresh-food section. On models with the ice maker up in the fresh-food door or ceiling, a leaky seal can drip water down the inner wall. We check both before replacing anything.
How old is too old to repair a Maytag refrigerator?
Age alone doesn't decide it. A well-kept Maytag can be worth repairing at 12 or 15 years if the fix is a fan, defrost part or valve. It is usually not worth it when the compressor or sealed system fails on an older unit, or when parts for an early model have been discontinued. We check parts availability before you commit and give you a written quote.
