FridgeRepair.pro is an independent repair service operated by Appliance Repair Pros. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Whirlpool or Whirlpool Corporation. The Whirlpool name and logo identify the equipment we repair.

Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir, Amana and Admiral refrigerators all come from Whirlpool, which for years also built many of the refrigerators sold as Kenmore. Add the ones under its own name and Whirlpool refrigerator and freezer repair becomes a big share of our work. For a homeowner that’s good news: Whirlpool parts are stocked widely, and the problems these units develop are well understood.
The Whirlpool family
Whirlpool Corporation is based in Benton Harbor, Michigan. It bought KitchenAid in 1986 and Maytag, along with Amana and JennAir, in 2006. The result is one engineering base sold at several price points. A Whirlpool-branded French-door model and its Maytag or Amana counterpart may share cabinets, sealed systems and ice makers, and differ mainly in finishes, feature sets and warranty terms.
If your refrigerator says Kenmore and the model number starts with 106, it was built by Whirlpool and most of what’s on this page applies to you.
Whirlpool refrigerator designs and how they fail
French-door and four-door models
These are where most of our Whirlpool ice-maker calls come from. Many models put the ice maker in an insulated compartment high in the fresh-food section rather than in the freezer drawer. It saves freezer space, but the compartment depends on chilled air ducted up from below and a tight seal to keep warm, damp air out. When either fails, ice bridges together, the auger jams or meltwater drips onto the shelves. Our guide to an ice maker not making ice covers the safe checks.
Side-by-side models
The ice maker sits in the freezer with a chute through the freezer door. Dispenser problems are common here: a door-chute flap that doesn’t seal, a dispenser switch or actuator that wears out, or a water line that freezes inside the door.
Top-freezer and bottom-freezer models
These are the simplest Whirlpool refrigerators and among the most reliable. When they fail, it is usually an evaporator fan, a defrost component or the main control on electronic models.
Whirlpool freezers
Whirlpool sells both chest and upright freezers. Chest freezers are manual defrost: frost buildup is normal and you clear it yourself every so often. Uprights are usually frost-free, which adds a defrost heater, a sensor and a fan. When an upright runs warm with frost on its back panel, the defrost system is the first suspect. For more on freezer diagnostics, see our freezer repair page.
Problems we see most on Whirlpool
- Ice bridging or water dripping from the fresh-food ice compartment on French-door models.
- Fresh-food section warming up from a defrost failure, a stuck air damper or a failing evaporator fan.
- Water under the unit from a cracked inlet valve, a loose supply line, or a blocked defrost drain.
- Dispenser not working on side-by-sides: switch, actuator or a frozen water line in the door.
- Upright freezer warming with frost on the back panel.
Finding the model and serial number
On most Whirlpool refrigerators the rating label is inside the fresh-food section, on a side wall or ceiling near the top, or low on a side wall beside the crisper drawers. Upright freezers usually have it on an interior side wall; chest freezers often have it on the outside back or an end panel. Photograph the whole label and have it ready when you call.
Whirlpool appliances we service
Whirlpool refrigerator repair
Whirlpool sells top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, French-door and four-door refrigerators in standard and counter-depth sizes. Many models share their chassis with Maytag, Amana and KitchenAid, which keeps parts easy to source.
Whirlpool freezer repair
Whirlpool chest freezers are manual defrost and simple to service. Upright models add frost-free hardware, so a warm upright freezer is often a defrost or fan problem rather than a compressor failure.

Whirlpool repair FAQ
Why does the ice maker in my Whirlpool French door fridge keep freezing up?
On many Whirlpool French-door models the ice maker sits in an insulated box in the upper corner of the fresh-food section, fed cold air from the freezer below. If that box's seal leaks, the air duct ices over, or the fill tube freezes, you get a solid block of ice or no ice at all. Replacing the ice maker alone rarely solves it, so we check airflow and seals first.
Are Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid refrigerators the same inside?
Often they are closely related. All three are Whirlpool Corporation brands, and many freestanding models share cabinets, sealed systems, fans and ice makers, with differences in styling, features and trim. That overlap makes parts easy to find. It doesn't make every part interchangeable, so we always order by your exact model number.
My Whirlpool upright freezer has frost on the back wall and the food is soft. What does that mean?
Heavy frost on the back panel of a frost-free upright freezer usually means the automatic defrost system has stopped working. The coil behind the panel ices over and airflow stops. The cause is typically a defrost heater, a defrost thermostat or the control that runs them. Empty the freezer into coolers and call us; running it in that state only makes the ice thicker.
