Gig Harbor and the peninsula west of the Tacoma Narrows cover a lot of ground: older homes around the harbor, newer subdivisions, gated golf communities, and rural lots toward Kopachuck and Rosedale. For refrigerator and ice maker repair here, the water supply matters almost as much as the house, because many outlying properties are on private wells. We also fix freezers and wine coolers.
Across the bridge
Reaching Gig Harbor from Tacoma means crossing the Narrows bridge, which is tolled in the eastbound direction. The crossing is easy, but bridge traffic shapes a technician’s day, so we try to plan peninsula visits with that in mind. Call early and tell us roughly where you are on the peninsula: in town, up near Canterwood, or out toward Fox Island or Purdy.
Well water and ice makers
Many homes in town are on a city or water district supply, but outlying properties are often on private wells. Well water can carry sediment, iron or hardness minerals, and refrigerators feel that first in the water and ice system.
What it typically looks like:
- Ice cubes that get smaller or come out hollow
- A water dispenser that slows to a trickle
- Cloudy or off-tasting ice even with a new filter
- A refrigerator filter that clogs well before its rated life
The fix may be a filter, a water inlet valve or the ice maker itself, and sometimes a whole-house treatment issue that’s outside our work. Our guide to small or cloudy ice covers the checks you can make, and ice maker repair explains our diagnosis.
Gated and HOA communities
Canterwood is gated, and several other developments on the peninsula have HOA rules about parking and service vehicles. Give us entry instructions when you book. Homes with steep driveways down to the waterfront should mention that too.
Waterfront and harbor homes
Homes around the harbor and along the shoreline often have a second refrigerator, beverage center or wine cooler downstairs or out on a covered deck. Units that sit near the water in a semi-outdoor space see more moisture and rust than kitchen units, and their door gaskets and fans tend to give out first. A beverage center that won’t hold temperature in August, when the deck is in full sun, may simply be beyond what it was built for. For main-kitchen problems, start with our refrigerator repair page.

Repair service in Gig Harbor: FAQ
My home is on a private well. Why does my ice maker keep failing?
Well water can carry sediment, iron or minerals that a city supply would filter out. Over time that clogs the refrigerator's water filter and the small screen inside the water inlet valve, which slows filling and shrinks the cubes. Change the refrigerator filter on schedule, or more often, and check any whole-house filter too. If ice stays small after that, the inlet valve or its screen likely needs service.
Can your technician get into Canterwood or another gated community?
It can, with a little help from you. When you book, tell us how entry works: a gate code, a call box that rings your phone, or a guard who needs our company name on a list. If your HOA restricts where service vehicles park, let us know that as well so the technician doesn't lose time at the gate.
Is it fine to keep a refrigerator on a covered deck by the water?
A standard indoor refrigerator can work there, but it has a harder life. Damp air rusts the cabinet and hinges, condenser coils collect grime faster, and temperature swings make the controls work harder. Outdoor-rated beverage units are built for those conditions. If you keep an indoor model outside, clean the coils regularly and expect door gaskets and fans to wear sooner than they would in the kitchen.
