People still call any refrigerator a “frigidaire,” which tells you how common the name was for so long. Today it is Electrolux Group’s volume brand in the US, and its top-freezers, upright freezers and chest freezers are everywhere, from apartments to garage shelves. That makes Frigidaire refrigerator and freezer repair about as familiar as appliance work gets: parts are abundant and failure patterns are well known, which keeps most repairs predictable.
Where Frigidaire comes from
Frigidaire started early in the 20th century and spent decades owned by General Motors before passing to White Consolidated Industries, which Electrolux bought in the 1980s. Today Frigidaire shares engineering with the Electrolux brand, which sits above it as the premium label.
Frigidaire also built many refrigerators and freezers sold as Kenmore. If your Kenmore model number starts with 253, it’s a Frigidaire underneath, and this page applies.
The Frigidaire lineup
Frigidaire sells three tiers: standard Frigidaire, Gallery and Professional. They range from basic top-freezers to French-door models and matching all-refrigerator and all-freezer columns. The tiers differ in features and finish more than in core engineering, which is why many fans, valves and defrost parts cross between them.
Freezers deserve their own mention. Frigidaire upright and chest freezers are among the most common in Greater Seattle garages and basements, and they come in manual-defrost and frost-free versions.
Ice makers and wine coolers
Most Frigidaire ice maker calls involve the ice maker inside a refrigerator. Side-by-sides and some top-freezers make ice in the freezer; many French-door models make it in an insulated compartment on the fresh-food door, which depends on a good seal and steady airflow from the freezer. Frigidaire-branded countertop ice makers and wine coolers are compact, low-cost appliances. Some are made by partner manufacturers under license, and parts support for them is thinner. We’ll tell you when one isn’t worth repairing. For more, see ice maker repair.
Problems we see most on Frigidaire
Refrigerators
- Fresh-food door ice compartment frosting or ice fusing into a block on French-door models.
- Ice maker not filling: frozen fill tube, weak water valve or low water pressure.
- Fresh-food section warm, freezer cold: a defrost failure or a stopped evaporator fan.
- Water on the floor: supply line, water valve or a blocked defrost drain.
Freezers
- Frost building fast on manual-defrost models, often a lid or door gasket problem. Our freezer frost buildup guide explains what’s normal.
- Frost-free uprights warming with frost on the back panel: defrost heater, thermostat or control.
- Freezer stopping in a cold garage, which can be a placement issue rather than a failed part.
- Clicking with no cooling: compressor start components or the compressor itself.
Parts and practical notes
Frigidaire parts are among the easiest to source, which often means quicker repairs. Before paying for an ice maker repair, it’s worth checking your model and serial number on recalls.gov or the CPSC website; if a recall covers it, the manufacturer handles the fix.
Finding the model and serial number
On Frigidaire refrigerators, the label is usually inside the fresh-food compartment on an upper side wall or near the ceiling. Upright freezers carry it on an interior side wall; chest freezers often have it on the outside back or an end. Photograph the full label before you call.

Frigidaire repair FAQ
Why does my Frigidaire refrigerator's ice maker keep jamming?
On models that make ice in the fresh-food door, jams usually come from warm, humid air leaking into the ice compartment through a worn seal, which fuses cubes together. On freezer-mounted ice makers, a fill tube that freezes or a water valve that drips can create ice buildup. Check whether the ice is clumped or simply missing, and tell us when you call.
Should I repair or replace my Frigidaire upright freezer?
If the cause is a defrost heater, thermostat, fan, door gasket or start component, repair usually makes sense. If the compressor has failed or there's a refrigerant leak on an older freezer, replacement is usually the better value. Note whether the freezer is completely silent, running constantly or cycling normally but staying warm, since each points to a different area.
What's the difference between Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery and Frigidaire Professional?
They are tiers of the same brand. Standard Frigidaire covers the basics, Gallery adds more features and finishes, and Professional offers a heavier stainless look and premium options. Mechanically, many parts are shared across the tiers. For repair, the full model number matters far more than the badge on the door.
