An Ariston in the Seattle area is most likely a compact or European-width unit in a condo, an accessory dwelling unit or a kitchen designed around European appliances. The refrigerators are rare in the US, so Ariston refrigerator repair is rare here too. The cooling diagnosis is routine; the real question is parts, and we answer it during the diagnostic.

Where Ariston refrigerators come from

Ariston was an Italian appliance brand of the Merloni family company, later renamed Indesit. Whirlpool acquired Indesit in 2014. In parts of Europe it was sold as Hotpoint-Ariston, and refrigerators carrying the Ariston name in the US are uncommon. The badge alone says little about a US unit, so we identify yours from the model and serial number on the rating label. A photo of that label before the visit lets us check parts sooner.

How these refrigerators are built

European-format refrigerators are typically narrower and shorter than standard US units. Some are fully integrated behind a cabinet door; others are freestanding. Either way, inside you will find familiar parts: a compressor and condenser, an evaporator, a thermostat or electronic control, a defrost system and door gaskets.

If yours is an integrated unit, the cabinet door is attached to the refrigerator door on a sliding bracket. When that bracket loosens, the door stops sealing, and frost or warm temperatures follow. That is a mechanical fix and often the simplest repair on these units.

Many compact European refrigerators also pair a direct-cool fresh-food section with a small manual-defrost freezer compartment. If yours has a freezer that slowly fills with ice, defrosting it by hand every few months is normal upkeep, not a fault. Thick ice that returns within days points to a door or gasket problem.

Ariston refrigerator problems we commonly see

  • Refrigerator warm, freezer fine: thermostat, evaporator fan on frost-free models, or a defrost fault.
  • Ice building on the back wall of the fresh-food section: normal in moderation on some European designs; excessive ice points to a seal or thermostat problem.
  • Water inside the fresh-food section: a blocked drain hole at the back wall.
  • Door not sealing: worn gasket or, on integrated units, a loose door-to-door bracket.

Finding the model and serial number

Look inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on a side wall near the crisper drawers. Integrated units sometimes place the label on the cabinet edge, visible only with the door open. Send us a photo when you book; with this brand, the full label is essential.

What you can check yourself

Check the door seal and the bracket on integrated units, and clear the drain hole at the back of the fresh-food section with a pipe cleaner if water is pooling. Our refrigerator not cooling guide and repair or replace cover the next steps.

Ariston repair FAQ

Can you still get parts for an Ariston refrigerator?

Sometimes, and it is the main question on every Ariston job. The brand has had a small and changing presence in the US, so parts are not stocked locally and some older units have parts that are no longer made. We look up your exact model during the diagnostic and tell you what is available and how long it takes before you spend anything on parts.

Is Ariston the same company that makes water heaters?

The Ariston name has been used by more than one business. The appliance brand came from Italy's Merloni family company, later called Indesit, which Whirlpool acquired in 2014. Ariston-branded water heaters and boilers come from a separate company. When you look up parts, search by the full model number rather than the brand name alone.

Should I repair or replace my Ariston refrigerator?

If the fault is a thermostat, fan, gasket or defrost part and the part is available, repair is usually sensible. If the compressor has failed or the part is discontinued, replacement is often the better choice. Compact units are easier to replace than built-ins, as long as you measure the opening carefully first.
