Amana Refrigerator and Freezer Repair

We repair Amana top-freezer, side-by-side, bottom-freezer and French-door refrigerators and Amana chest and upright freezers. Amana is Whirlpool's value brand, so parts are easy to get; the main question is usually whether the repair cost makes sense for the age of the unit.

  • $149 diagnostic, credited to the repair
  • Licensed, trained & insured
  • Parts & labor warranty
  • OEM parts
  • Mon–Sun, 8 AM – 8 PM

FridgeRepair.pro is an independent repair service operated by Appliance Repair Pros. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Amana or Whirlpool Corporation. The Amana name and logo identify the equipment we repair.

Amana is Whirlpool Corporation’s budget-minded brand, making basic top-freezers and side-by-sides with simple controls, plus freezers built for the garage or basement, and there are a lot of common parts behind them. Amana refrigerator and freezer repair is generally straightforward; the real conversation is about value, because on a low-cost unit some repairs make sense and others don’t.

The Amana story, briefly

Amana takes its name from the Amana Colonies in Iowa, where the company started and where Amana-branded refrigerators and freezers were built for decades. The brand is often credited with the first upright home freezer. Over the years it passed through several owners, including Raytheon, before Maytag bought it in 2001 and Whirlpool acquired Maytag in 2006.

Today’s Amana refrigerators are built on Whirlpool platforms. Older Amanas still in service may share parts with Maytag-era refrigerators, so we always work from the full model number. The Amana name on furnaces and air conditioners belongs to a different company, which trips people up when they search for manuals.

What Amana units are like inside

Amana trims away features rather than changing the engineering. Expect:

  • Dial or simple electronic controls rather than touchscreens.
  • Fewer dispensers and ice makers, especially on top-freezer models, though many are ice-maker ready.
  • Standard frost-free cooling in refrigerators: one evaporator, one fan, a timed defrost.
  • Manual-defrost chest freezers with the condenser built into the cabinet walls.

Fewer features means fewer failure points. When an Amana stops working properly, the cause is usually one of a short list of parts.

Problems we see most on Amana

Refrigerators

  • Fresh-food section warming while the freezer still feels cold, usually a defrost failure or a stopped evaporator fan.
  • Ice maker not filling on side-by-side models: a frozen fill tube or a weak water valve.
  • Loud running or buzzing from a worn condenser fan or a struggling compressor start component.
  • Water under the crisper drawers from a blocked defrost drain.

Freezers

  • Heavy frost buildup, normal on manual-defrost units but faster with a worn lid or door gasket. See our freezer frost buildup guide.
  • Freezer not running in a cold garage, a placement issue as much as a repair one.
  • Warm upright freezer with frost on the back panel on frost-free models, pointing to defrost parts.

Repair or replace on an Amana

We are straight with you about value. Fans, valves, thermostats, start components, gaskets and defrost parts are generally worth fixing on an Amana that is otherwise in good shape. A compressor failure or refrigerant leak on an older Amana usually is not. Chest freezers are a special case: because their condenser tubing runs inside the walls, a leak there generally means the freezer is done. Our repair-or-replace guide explains how we think it through.

Finding the model number

On Amana refrigerators the label is usually inside the fresh-food compartment on a side wall, up high or beside the crisper drawers. Chest freezers often have it on the outside back or on one end; upright freezers inside on a side wall. A clear photo saves a lot of back-and-forth.

Amana appliances we service

Amana refrigerators

Amana's refrigerator lineup leans on top-freezer and side-by-side models, with some bottom-freezer and French-door options. They run on Whirlpool platforms with fewer features and simpler controls. About refrigerator repair

Amana freezers

Amana chest freezers are manual defrost and very simple; upright models may be manual or frost-free. They are common in garages, where cold rooms and humidity cause their own problems. About freezer repair

How a Amana repair visit works

  1. Call or send a request

We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.

  2. Diagnosis in your home

A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.

  3. Written quote first

You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.

  4. Repair with OEM parts

Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.

Amana repair FAQ

Is Amana a good brand to repair or should I just replace it?

Amana refrigerators use common Whirlpool-family parts, so routine repairs like fans, defrost components, valves and thermostats are usually worth doing. The math changes with sealed-system failures: on an inexpensive refrigerator, a compressor or refrigerant leak repair can approach the cost of a new one. We give you a written quote so you can decide with real numbers.

My Amana chest freezer is covered in thick frost. Is it broken?

Probably not. Amana chest freezers are manual defrost, so frost builds up over time and has to be cleared by hand: empty it, unplug it, let it melt with the lid open and towels on the floor, then dry it before restarting. Faster or uneven frost growth often points to a lid gasket that isn't sealing, which is a part we can replace.

Do Amana air conditioners and Amana refrigerators come from the same company?

No. Amana refrigerators and kitchen appliances belong to Whirlpool. Amana-branded heating and air-conditioning equipment comes from a different company entirely. If you are looking for manuals or parts online, make sure you're on a site for Amana kitchen appliances, not HVAC equipment, or the information won't match your refrigerator.
