For most Americans, Smeg means the FAB, the retro-style refrigerator that made the Italian brand known here. Because FABs are freestanding, we can generally repair them right where they stand. They’re simpler inside than most modern refrigerators, which keeps a lot of Smeg refrigerator repair straightforward, but parts sourcing takes more planning than for a mainstream brand.
About Smeg
Smeg is a family-owned Italian appliance maker based in Guastalla, in northern Italy. It is best known for design, especially the FAB line of 1950s-style refrigerators in bright colors and patterns. Smeg also makes cooking appliances, dishwashers and small appliances.
In the US, Smeg refrigerators are mostly FAB models. They are often second refrigerators in a kitchen, a bar or a home office, as well as main refrigerators in smaller homes.
The FAB lineup
FAB refrigerators come in several sizes:
- Compact one-door models: a small refrigerator, sometimes with an internal freezer compartment
- Larger one-door models: a full-height refrigerator with a small freezer section on some versions
- Two-door models: a refrigerator and a separate freezer section
They come in many colors and finishes, and on many FAB models the door hinge side is fixed, with left- and right-hinged versions sold separately.
How FAB design affects Smeg refrigerator repair
FABs are more traditional inside than most American refrigerators:
- Simple controls. Many use a dial thermostat inside the refrigerator rather than an electronic display. A failing thermostat can let the unit run constantly or not at all.
- Small freezer sections. Some FAB freezer compartments need manual defrosting. Ice buildup over months is expected on those models.
- Rear-wall defrost on some models. On refrigerators that defrost through the back wall, meltwater runs down to a small drain hole. If that hole clogs, water collects at the bottom of the refrigerator.
- Colored doors and parts. Door gaskets, handles and trim are often specific to the color and hinge side.
Problems we commonly see
- Ice building up in the freezer section faster than expected
- Water pooling at the bottom of the refrigerator, often from a clogged drain hole
- Door seals that no longer grip, especially on older units
- A refrigerator that runs constantly or does not cool, often a thermostat or sealed-system problem
- Lights that stop working
Door seals are a common issue, and our door gasket guide shows how to check yours. For general cooling diagnosis, see refrigerator repair.
Finding the model and serial number
Smeg places the rating label inside the refrigerator, usually on a side wall low down near the crisper drawer. On some compact models, it may be on the back of the cabinet. The full model number, including any color code, is what we need to order the right parts.
Service notes
Common parts are usually obtainable, but some Smeg parts come from Italy and take time. Color-matched parts like gaskets and handles may have longer lead times. We confirm availability before we quote. On older units with a sealed-system failure, our repair or replace guide can help you decide.

Smeg repair FAQ
Why is ice building up in the freezer compartment of my Smeg FAB?
Some Smeg FAB models have a small freezer section that needs manual defrosting from time to time. If yours has one, a layer of ice building up over months is normal, and your owner's manual explains how to defrost it. If ice builds quickly, the door seal may not be gripping, or the door may not be closing fully, which lets humid air in.
Can I get a replacement door gasket for a Smeg FAB?
In most cases. Gaskets are made for specific Smeg models, and on many FAB models the door hinge side matters too. We order the correct gasket using the full model number from your rating label. Because some parts ship from Italy, there can be a wait. In the meantime, cleaning the gasket and the cabinet edge can help it seal better.
My Smeg refrigerator is running but not cooling. Is it worth fixing?
Often, but it depends on what failed. A thermostat, fan, light switch or door seal is a reasonable repair. A failed compressor or a refrigerant leak in a small refrigerator is a bigger decision, and we tell you if the repair costs more than the unit is worth to you. Many owners keep a FAB for its looks, which can tip the decision toward repair.
