FridgeRepair.pro is an independent repair service operated by Appliance Repair Pros. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by BlueStar or Prizer-Painter Stove Works. The BlueStar name and logo identify the equipment we repair.

Most people know BlueStar for its ranges, and its refrigerators turn up far less often. When BlueStar refrigerator repair does come up, the cooling system holds no surprises. We work on BlueStar freestanding and built-in refrigerators, diagnose them like any frost-free unit, and spend most of our extra effort confirming which parts are available and how long they take.
Who BlueStar is
BlueStar is owned by Prizer-Painter Stove Works of Reading, Pennsylvania. The company built its name on gas ranges with open burners, and on offering those ranges in a very wide choice of custom colors. Refrigeration came later, as a way to complete a BlueStar kitchen with a matching refrigerator.
For a homeowner, that means the refrigerator was likely chosen for its look next to the range. For us, it means a familiar cooling system wrapped in a brand-specific exterior.
How BlueStar refrigerators are built
- Freestanding units breathe at the back and base like most kitchen refrigerators. They need clearance behind and above to shed heat.
- Built-in units sit flush in cabinetry and move air through a front grille. The condenser behind that grille gathers dust and pet hair over time.
Inside, both types use an evaporator coil and fan, an automatic defrost system that drains to a pan near the compressor, and electronic controls. Nothing about the color or the badge changes how those parts fail.
BlueStar refrigerator problems we commonly see
- Warm fresh-food section with a working freezer: evaporator fan, iced-over coil from a defrost failure, or an airflow damper.
- Both sections warm, compressor humming: dirty condenser, failed condenser fan, or compressor start components.
- Puddle inside the bottom of the fresh-food section: frozen or blocked defrost drain.
- Gasket gaps: door alignment on a heavy door, or a gasket that has hardened.
One pattern we see: the refrigerator side warms to 50°F over a day or two while the freezer feels normal. When we remove the rear freezer panel, the evaporator is a block of ice. A failed defrost heater, thermostat or control is behind it, and we test each before ordering anything.
Finding the model and serial number
The rating label on BlueStar refrigerators is usually inside the fresh-food compartment on a side wall or the ceiling. On built-ins, also look behind the front grille. If your unit is a custom color, mention it when you call.
Service notes for BlueStar owners
Keep the grille or rear clearance free of dust, and keep food from blocking the air vents on the back wall. Our refrigerator repair page explains how a visit works, and repair or replace helps if you are deciding on an older unit. Our Bertazzoni page covers another range maker that added refrigeration.

BlueStar repair FAQ
My BlueStar refrigerator is a custom color. Does that change the repair?
Not for the cooling system. Compressors, fans, sensors and defrost parts are the same regardless of finish. Color matters only for exterior parts such as door panels, handles or trim. Those have to come from BlueStar in your specific finish, which usually means a longer wait. We separate cosmetic parts from cooling repairs so your refrigerator is not out of service while a panel is on order.
Where are BlueStar refrigerators made?
BlueStar is known for ranges built in Reading, Pennsylvania. The company doesn't publish where each of its refrigerator models is manufactured, and that doesn't change how we diagnose them. What matters for repair is the model and serial number on the rating label, which tells us exactly which parts fit your unit.
Is it worth repairing a BlueStar refrigerator?
Usually, if the failure is a fan, a defrost part, a gasket or a control. Those are common, moderate repairs. A built-in unit also has a fixed cabinet opening, which makes replacement more involved than swapping a freestanding refrigerator. A sealed-system failure on an older unit is the case where we will talk through replacement with you.
