FridgeRepair.pro is an independent repair service operated by Appliance Repair Pros. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Big Chill. The Big Chill name and logo identify the equipment we repair.

Big Chill logo

The candy-colored cabinet and chrome trim are pure 1950s styling, but the cooling system behind them is a current frost-free design. That makes Big Chill refrigerator repair a good example of a retro look over modern internals. We repair Big Chill refrigerators as an independent service, diagnose the cooling side the same way we would any refrigerator, and check availability on the decorative parts that only the brand supplies.

Who Big Chill is

Big Chill is a Colorado company known for retro-styled kitchen appliances in bright colors, sold as a matching suite of refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers and range hoods. It is a niche brand in the US market, chosen for how it looks. Big Chill doesn’t publish who builds its refrigeration hardware, so we identify the platform from the model and serial number on the rating label, and the diagnosis works the same either way.

Retro styling, conventional cooling

A Big Chill refrigerator has two layers:

  • The styling layer: rounded doors, chrome or colored handles, badges, kick plates and enamel paint in a specific color. These parts are unique to Big Chill.
  • The working layer: a compressor, condenser, evaporator coil and fan, automatic defrost heater and drain, temperature controls, and door gaskets. These follow standard frost-free refrigerator design.

That split decides how a repair goes. Cooling faults are usually quick to diagnose. Cosmetic parts are the slow ones.

Big Chill refrigerator problems we commonly see

  • Fresh-food section warm, freezer cold: evaporator fan or a defrost fault that has iced over the coil.
  • Whole refrigerator warm: condenser dusty or condenser fan stopped.
  • Water under the crisper drawers: defrost drain blocked or frozen.
  • Door not sealing: a gasket that has hardened, or a door pulled out of alignment by heavy items in the door shelves.
  • Damaged trim: handles, badges and chrome pieces loosened or cracked.

Picture this: a bright red Big Chill in a remodeled kitchen starts leaving a puddle under the crisper drawers every few days. Water from the defrost cycle is freezing in the drain and backing up. Clearing the drain fixes the symptom; we also check the drain heater or clip, if the model uses one, so it does not come back.

Finding the model and serial number

Check inside the fresh-food compartment on the side walls first, then near the top. Some refrigerators also place a label behind the lower kick plate. Please note your color when you call, since color affects any exterior part.

Simple checks first

Make sure the doors close fully, the condenser area is reasonably clean and nothing is pressed against the back wall vents. If it is still warm, see our refrigerator not cooling guide. For how a visit works, see refrigerator repair.

Big Chill repair FAQ

Is a Big Chill refrigerator old technology inside?

No. The rounded doors, chrome handles and bright colors imitate a 1950s refrigerator, but the cooling system is modern: a sealed compressor system, an evaporator fan, automatic defrost and current controls. That is why most repairs look like repairs on any other frost-free refrigerator. The vintage parts are cosmetic, and those are the ones that may need ordering.

Can you replace a chipped panel or a broken chrome handle?

Handles, badges, trim and colored panels are cosmetic parts that come from Big Chill in your specific color and style. We can identify the part from the model label, but availability and lead time vary. If the refrigerator also has a cooling problem, we fix that first so you are not waiting on a handle to have a working refrigerator.

My Big Chill refrigerator runs all the time. Is that normal?

Modern refrigerators run longer cycles than older ones, so some long run time is normal. Constant running combined with warm food is not. The usual causes are a dirty condenser, a door gasket that is not sealing, or a fan that has stopped. Check that the doors close fully and the condenser is clean before booking.
