Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Repair

Sears sold Kenmore Elite as the premium tier of its house brand, with more features, more electronics and higher prices than standard Kenmore models. Like all Kenmores, it was built by other manufacturers, and on Elite refrigerators LG built a large share, which shapes most of what we see. So Kenmore Elite refrigerator repair is the same detective work as any Kenmore, with higher stakes.

Who builds Kenmore Elite refrigerators

The three digits before the period in the model number name the maker. On Elite refrigerators you will typically see:

• 795: LG. Many Elite French-door and bottom-freezer models, often with door-in-door storage and in-door ice.
• 106: Whirlpool. Some Elite side-by-side and French-door units, especially older ones.
• 253: Frigidaire (Electrolux). Less common on Elite refrigerators but present.

The LG-built Elite: what to know

Most Elite calls we take involve the 795 models, so they deserve their own section.

Ice in the fresh-food door

LG-built Elite French-doors usually make ice in an insulated compartment on the left fresh-food door, fed by cold air from the freezer. When that compartment’s seal or the air duct fails, you get frost, fused ice and a jammed auger. Sometimes there’s a second ice maker in the freezer drawer.

Linear compressors

Many LG-built Elite refrigerators use a linear compressor, a design that runs more quietly and efficiently than a conventional one. If your Elite runs but won’t cool, we test the compressor, its control circuitry, the defrost system and the fans before drawing a conclusion. Any refrigerant work on these units is handled by a technician with EPA Section 608 certification and proper recovery equipment.

Door-in-door storage

Kenmore called its version Grab-N-Go. It adds a second gasket and latch to one of the fresh-food doors, and a leak there can cause sweating, frost or a warm door bin.

Whirlpool-built and Frigidaire-built Elites

A 106 Elite behaves like a premium Whirlpool of the same era: watch for fresh-food ice compartment problems on French-door models, dispenser faults on side-by-sides and the usual defrost and fan wear. A 253 Elite follows Frigidaire patterns, with ice maker, water-valve and evaporator fan problems near the top of the list.

Problems we see most on Kenmore Elite

• Ice compartment frost or no ice on French-door models.
• Running but not cooling, which on 795 models calls for careful compressor and control testing.
• Display or control board faults, more common on these feature-heavy units.
• Sweating around the door-in-door panel.
• Water dispenser slow or leaking, often a filter, valve or frozen line in the door.

Repair decisions and labels

Elite refrigerators were expensive, and most are worth repairing when the problem is a fan, valve, ice maker or board.
