LG Refrigerator and Ice Maker Repair

Three areas account for most of the LG calls we get: cooling, the ice maker and water dispensing. We do LG refrigerator repair on freestanding models in homes across Greater Seattle, from basic top-freezers to InstaView French doors with Craft Ice. We test the compressor, defrost system and electronics rather than swapping parts on a guess.

The LG refrigerator lineup

LG Electronics is a South Korean company, and its refrigerators are among the brands we see most. The current range covers French-door, four-door, side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer designs in standard and counter-depth sizes. A few features define the line:

• InstaView: a tinted glass panel in the door that lights up when you knock on it twice, so you can see inside without opening the door
• Door-in-Door: a smaller outer door that opens to a front compartment for drinks and condiments
• Craft Ice: a second ice maker, usually in the freezer drawer, that makes round, slow-melting ice
• ThinQ app: Wi-Fi models report status and alerts to your phone

How LG refrigerators are built

Linear and inverter compressors

Many LG refrigerators use a linear compressor, where a magnet drives the piston straight back and forth instead of through a crankshaft. It is quiet and efficient. When one weakens, though, the symptoms are subtle: the unit may hum along normally while temperatures creep up over days. We confirm a compressor fault with measurements of the sealed system before recommending anything that expensive.

The door ice maker

On French-door models the main ice maker lives in the upper part of the left fresh-food door. Freezer air is ducted to it through the cabinet and into the door. That design saves freezer space, but it gives humid air several places to sneak in, and moisture turns into frost around the ice bin and dispenser chute.

Electronic controls

Temperature sensors, a main control board and, on inverter models, a compressor drive board all work together. A flashing display or a code on the panel means the board has logged something. Write it down before you reset anything, because a power cycle can clear it.

Common LG refrigerator repairs

• Fresh-food section warm, freezer partly cold, often from an iced-over evaporator or a fan that has stopped
• A rattling or clicking fan, usually the blade striking frost
• Ice packed solid in the door compartment, or no ice at all
• A water dispenser that drips, runs slowly or does nothing, from a frozen line, a failing valve or an old filter
• Water pooling under the crisper drawers from a blocked defrost drain

Where to find the model and serial number

LG puts its rating label inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on a side wall. If shelves or bins hide it, look lower down near the crisper drawers. Send us a photo, or read off the full model number when you book.

Service notes

LG parts are widely stocked, and fans, sensors, valves and ice makers usually arrive within days. Control boards and complete door assemblies can take longer. InstaView glass and full door replacements are costly, so if one is part of the repair, we will tell you before anyone orders anything.
