Frigidaire Freezer Repair

We repair Frigidaire upright, chest and garage-ready freezers. Most warm-freezer problems come down to a defrost fault on frost-free uprights, a seal or lid problem on chest models, or a thermostat or start-component failure on either.

Frigidaire freezer problems we see

  • Frost-free upright warming, with ice behind the panel. A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control lets the coil ice over. The cabinet warms slowly even though the compressor seems to run constantly.
  • Garage-ready freezer running nonstop. Garage-ready models tolerate a wider temperature range, but dust, clutter and summer heat still choke the condenser. A unit that never shuts off often needs airflow before it needs parts.
  • Thick frost at the top of a chest freezer. Frost near the lid opening means warm air is getting in, through a torn or stiff gasket, a weak hinge, or a lid propped open by an overfilled basket.
  • Power light on but nothing running. If the light is on and the compressor is silent, we test the thermostat or control first, then the start relay and overload, then the compressor.
  • Upright door that won't stay closed. Uprights are leveled to lean back slightly so the door swings shut. If the unit tips forward, or the gasket has frozen to the cabinet and torn, the door can rest open just enough to frost the cabinet.
  • Clicking from the back with no cooling. Repeated clicking every few minutes is usually the compressor's overload cutting out because the compressor can't start, often from a failed start relay.

What a warm or frosted Frigidaire freezer is telling us depends on three details: whether it is frost-free or manual-defrost, upright or chest, and garage-ready or not. Frigidaire freezer repair covers upright freezers, chest freezers and the all-freezer columns in the Professional line. Uprights come in both defrost types, chest freezers are generally manual-defrost, and many recent models are sold as garage-ready.

Upright, chest and column freezers: what’s different inside

Frost-free uprights

The evaporator is hidden behind a panel inside the cabinet, with a fan to move air and a heater to clear frost on a schedule. When the heater, the defrost thermostat or the defrost control fails, the coil ices over. The cabinet warms gradually, the fan may start ticking against the ice, and the compressor never seems to stop.

Frigidaire’s all-freezer columns work on the same principle, in a taller cabinet that’s often installed next to a matching all-refrigerator column.

Manual-defrost uprights

These cool through refrigerant tubing built into the shelves. Frost forms on those shelves and has to be melted off by hand from time to time. There’s no defrost heater to fail, so a warm manual upright points to the thermostat, the start components, the compressor or the sealed system.

Chest freezers

Chest freezers carry their evaporator tubing in the inner walls and usually their condenser tubing in the outer walls, which is why the cabinet feels warm. Cold air sinks, so very little escapes when you lift the lid. Heavy frost near the top is therefore a strong sign the lid isn’t sealing when it’s closed.

Garage-ready models

Frigidaire markets a number of upright and chest freezers as garage-ready, meaning they’re designed to run across a wider range of surrounding temperatures than an indoor-only model. That helps in an unheated garage. It doesn’t protect the condenser from sawdust, lint from a nearby dryer, or boxes stacked tight against the cabinet.

Frigidaire freezer repair: how we work through it

First we identify the type, because a frost-free upright and a chest freezer fail in different ways. Then we measure the cabinet temperature, check the frost pattern, and confirm what’s running: compressor, condenser fan where there is one, and evaporator fan on frost-free models.

From there, the order depends on the evidence. Ice behind the panel sends us to the defrost heater, thermostat and control. A silent compressor sends us to the thermostat, start relay and overload. A compressor that runs without cooling sends us to the sealed system, which is diagnosed and repaired only by EPA Section 608-certified technicians. On every type, we check the door or lid gasket, the hinges and the leveling, because a poor seal causes frost that can look like a mechanical failure.

You get a written quote before any work begins, and if the repair doesn’t make sense for the age of the freezer, we tell you.

What you can safely check

  • Confirm the outlet works. Reset a tripped GFCI, or plug in a lamp to test it.
  • Check the temperature setting and make sure no one turned the dial toward warm.
  • Look at the seal. Close the door or lid on a sheet of paper in several spots. If it pulls out with no drag, the gasket isn’t sealing there.
  • Check the leveling on an upright. The front should sit slightly higher than the back so the door closes on its own.
  • Make space. Pull boxes and bags away from the cabinet and vents so heat can escape.
  • Read the symptom guide. Our freezer not freezing guide explains what each pattern usually means.

When a Frigidaire freezer is worth fixing

Thermostats, start relays, defrost parts, fans, gaskets and hinges are good repairs on almost any Frigidaire freezer with a sound cabinet. A sealed-system failure on a chest freezer or basic upright usually isn’t, because the cost runs close to a new unit. A newer frost-free upright or an all-freezer column is more often worth a larger repair. See the Frigidaire brand page for the rest of the lineup, or our freezer repair page for other makes.

How a repair visit works

  1. Call or send a request

We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.

  2. Diagnosis in your home

A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.

  3. Written quote first

You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.

  4. Repair with OEM parts

Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my garage freezer stop working overnight?

Check power first. Garage outlets are often GFCI-protected, and a GFCI can trip from moisture or a power surge without anyone noticing until the food softens. Press the reset button, or plug a lamp in to confirm the outlet works. If the outlet is fine and the freezer is still silent, the thermostat, the start relay or the compressor needs testing, and that's when to call us.

Does a Frigidaire upright freezer need to be defrosted?

It depends on the model. Frost-free uprights defrost themselves, and heavy ice behind the rear panel means that system has failed. Manual-defrost uprights cool through the shelves, and they do need defrosting by hand once frost builds to roughly a quarter inch. Your owner's manual will say which type you have, and so will the shelves themselves.

My Frigidaire chest freezer is warm on the outside. Is that a problem?

Usually not. Chest freezers typically shed heat through condenser tubing inside the outer walls, so warm sides are normal while the compressor runs. It's a problem if the outside is much hotter than usual and the inside is warming, or if the sides are cool and the compressor is running constantly. Both suggest a sealed-system issue that needs a technician.

Is it worth repairing a Frigidaire freezer compressor?

On most chest freezers and basic uprights, a compressor replacement costs close to a new freezer, so we generally don't recommend it. Before you give up, make sure it really is the compressor. A failed start relay or thermostat produces similar symptoms and is a small repair. We test those first and tell you exactly what we find.
