Electrolux Refrigerator Repair

We repair Electrolux French-door, counter-depth and all-refrigerator column models. The faults we look at first are the ice compartment in the fresh-food section, the air damper, the defrost system and the touch controls.

Electrolux refrigerator problems we see

  • Ice compartment frosting over. On French-door models with the ice maker high in the fresh-food section, cold air is ducted up from the freezer. A leaking compartment seal lets moist air in, and frost builds until the ice bin freezes into a block.
  • Refrigerator warm, freezer at normal temperature. A motorized damper controls how much freezer air reaches the fresh-food side. If it sticks closed, the freezer stays cold, the refrigerator warms, and there's no frost to explain it.
  • Touch controls unresponsive or showing odd temperatures. Electrolux touch panels, including Wave-Touch controls on many models, can be locked, confused by a power interruption, or misled by a failing temperature sensor. The board itself is the last thing we suspect.
  • Water on the floor of the fresh-food section. A defrost drain that freezes or clogs sends meltwater into the cabinet instead of the drain pan. On ice and water models, a leaking fitting can also drip inside.
  • Crisper or freezer drawer that won't glide. Full-extension drawers ride on rails that can crack, bind on spilled liquid or get pushed off track by an overloaded basket. A drawer that won't close fully also lets in moist air.
  • Slow water dispenser. An overdue filter is the most common reason. If a new filter doesn't help, we check water pressure, the inlet valve and the line running to the door.

Cold air not reaching where it should is the root of most trouble on Electrolux French-door, counter-depth and all-refrigerator column models. An ice compartment frosts over, a damper sticks, or an evaporator stops defrosting. For Electrolux refrigerator repair, we trace the airflow, test the controls and sensors, and quote the repair in writing before any work starts.

How Electrolux refrigerators move cold air

Electrolux and Frigidaire share a parent company and a good deal of engineering. In many Electrolux French-door models, cold air is made at the freezer evaporator and sent into the fresh-food section through a motorized damper. The control opens and closes that damper to hold the temperature you set.

That design produces a distinctive failure pattern. If the damper sticks closed, the freezer stays cold and the fresh-food section warms, with no frost problem in sight. If the evaporator ices over instead, both sides suffer, the freezer more slowly than the refrigerator. Telling those two apart is the first job on most warm-refrigerator calls.

The ice compartment

Many Electrolux French-door refrigerators place the ice maker in an insulated compartment near the top of the fresh-food section, with freezer air ducted up to keep it cold. When the compartment’s seal or cover doesn’t close tightly, humid air meets that cold air and frost forms on the ice maker and bin. Cubes clump, the auger jams and the dispenser stops.

Replacing the ice maker rarely fixes this on its own. We look for the leak path, the airflow problem or the water valve that’s dripping between cycles.

All-refrigerator columns

Electrolux has also sold all-refrigerator and all-freezer columns designed to stand side by side. Each is its own appliance. An all-refrigerator column has no freezer section to borrow air from, so a cooling fault there comes down to its own evaporator, fan, controls or sealed system. Our Electrolux freezer repair page covers the freezer half of a pair.

Electrolux refrigerator repair: what we check

  • Temperatures in every section, including the ice compartment, compared with the settings on the panel.
  • The damper. We watch it open and close and confirm it responds to the control.
  • The evaporator and defrost parts, including the heater, the defrost sensor or thermostat, and the drain.
  • Fans. The evaporator fan and the condenser fan both need to run at the right times, and the ice compartment fan on models that have one.
  • Sensors and controls. Temperature sensors are checked against our own readings before we look at the touch panel or main board.
  • Water system. Filter, inlet valve, fill tube and the line to the door.
  • Drawers, doors and gaskets. A drawer off its rails or a door that doesn’t close square causes frost and condensation that look like a cooling fault.

What you can check first

  • Inspect the ice compartment cover. Make sure nothing keeps it from closing, and look for a torn or flattened seal.
  • Thaw a frozen bin. Remove the bin, let it thaw in the sink, dry it and reinstall it. If it freezes up again within days, something is causing it, and that’s worth a visit.
  • Check the control lock and the temperature settings on the touch panel.
  • Replace an old filter if the dispenser has slowed.
  • Vacuum the base grille with the refrigerator unplugged.

If you’re finding water inside the cabinet or on the floor, our refrigerator leaking water guide helps you narrow down the source before we arrive.

Is an Electrolux refrigerator worth repairing?

Usually. Electrolux refrigerators sit at the upper end of the mainstream market, and their common faults (dampers, fans, defrost components, sensors and ice compartment parts) are reasonable repairs. A touch-control board costs more, but it’s still a repair, not a reason to replace the refrigerator. We’d suggest replacement mainly for a sealed-system failure on an older unit, and we’ll explain why. For the rest of the brand’s lineup, see our Electrolux overview.

How a repair visit works

  1. Call or send a request

We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.

  2. Diagnosis in your home

A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.

  3. Written quote first

You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.

  4. Repair with OEM parts

Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ice keep freezing into a block in my Electrolux refrigerator?

On models with the ice maker in the fresh-food section, the ice compartment has to stay below freezing inside a much warmer space. If its seal is worn, the cover doesn't close fully, or the airflow from the freezer slows, the cubes partly melt and refreeze. The fix is finding why warm air is getting in, not just replacing the ice maker, or the bin will freeze again.

My Electrolux freezer is cold but the refrigerator is warm. What causes that?

On these refrigerators, the fresh-food section gets its cold air from the freezer through a damper. If the damper sticks closed, the evaporator frosts over, or the fan that pushes the air stops, the freezer stays cold while the refrigerator warms. We check for frost first, then test the damper and fan, so we replace only the part that failed.

Are Electrolux and Frigidaire refrigerator parts the same?

Some components are shared because both brands belong to the same parent company, but plenty are not, especially controls, trim and drawers. We match every part to your exact model number rather than assuming it carries over from a similar-looking refrigerator. That's the only reliable way to avoid ordering the wrong part and adding days to the repair.

Is it safe to reset Electrolux touch controls myself?

Turning the refrigerator off at the breaker, or unplugging it for a few minutes, is safe and sometimes clears a confused control. Check the owner's manual for the control lock as well. If the panel still misbehaves after a reset, or the fault comes back within a day or two, a sensor or board needs testing and it's time to call us.
