Tacoma’s housing spans more than a century, and that history shows up in nearly every refrigerator and freezer repair we do here. Early 1900s houses in the North End, Stadium District and around Proctor, mid-century homes in South Tacoma and on the East Side, and new apartments downtown and condos at Point Ruston each raise their own practical questions. Our technicians work on refrigerators, freezers, ice makers and wine coolers across the city.
Older homes: plan for the space, not just the fridge
In Tacoma’s older neighborhoods, many houses have steep front steps, narrow hallways and kitchens that were never designed for a modern refrigerator. Over the years owners have fitted larger units into those spaces, often with cabinets built tight around them.
That matters for two reasons. First, refrigerators need airflow around the condenser. A unit wedged into a remodeled nook with no gap at the top or back runs hot, cycles constantly and wears out its compressor and fans sooner. Second, many repairs require pulling the unit out from the wall. If trim, a tile ledge or a hardwood threshold is in the way, tell us before the visit.
Older Tacoma homes also tend to have a second refrigerator or a chest freezer in the basement. Basements here stay cool and can be damp, which is generally easy on a refrigerator, but dampness can rust the cabinet base and corrode wire connections at the compressor over time.
Counter-depth and built-in units in remodels
A lot of North End and Proctor kitchens have been redone with counter-depth or fully built-in refrigerators. These need different handling than a freestanding unit: panel removal, toe-kick access, and sometimes a top-mounted condenser. Our built-in refrigerator repair page explains what’s involved.
Apartments and condos downtown and on the waterfront
Downtown, the Stadium District’s older apartment buildings and the newer developments at Point Ruston all share the same logistics: limited parking, controlled entry and elevators. Let us know the building’s arrangements when you book. Narrow 24-inch and apartment-size refrigerators are common, and many fixes on them are quick once we can get to the unit.
Water, filters and ice makers
Tacoma Water’s supply is relatively soft, so heavy mineral scale on ice maker parts is less common here than in hard-water areas. That changes where we look first when ice comes out small, hollow or slow. Instead of assuming scale, we check the filter’s age, water pressure at the supply valve, the line behind the unit, and whether the fill tube has frozen.
If your ice maker has stopped entirely, start with our guide to small or cloudy ice and the ice maker repair page.
Across the Tideflats
Northeast Tacoma and Browns Point sit across the Tideflats from the rest of the city, up on a ridge with many view homes. They’re within our area, but the drive is different from a North End call, so tell us your neighborhood when you book. Homes there are often newer and larger, with French-door refrigerators, wine coolers and more electronic controls.

Repair service in Tacoma: FAQ
My house in the North End has a narrow kitchen doorway. Can you still repair the refrigerator?
Almost always. We do the repair where the refrigerator stands, so the doorway only matters if the unit has to leave the house. What we do need is enough room to slide it a foot or two out from the wall. If it's boxed in by cabinets or trim added during a remodel, mention it at booking so we can plan around it.
Tacoma's water is soft. Why is my ice still small or cloudy?
Soft water means mineral scale is less often the cause, so we look elsewhere first. An old water filter, low water pressure at the supply valve, a kinked line behind the refrigerator, or a fill tube that has frozen will all shrink the cubes. Replace the filter if it's past its date and check that the line isn't pinched. If the ice stays small, the water inlet valve is the next suspect.
Do you service apartments and condos downtown and at Point Ruston?
We do. Tell us the building's entry and parking arrangements when you book: whether there's a loading zone, a garage with a height limit, or a front desk that needs our name. If you rent, let us know who owns the refrigerator so the right person approves the written quote before we start the repair.
Is it worth repairing the old refrigerator in my basement?
Sometimes. A basement fridge that's simply running warm may need only a condenser cleaning, a fan motor or a door gasket, and those are reasonable fixes even on an older unit. If the compressor or sealed system has failed on a basic model that's well past its prime, we'll tell you honestly that replacing it is likely the better use of your money.
