Fox Island is largely residential, connected to the Gig Harbor peninsula by the Fox Island Bridge, and many of its homes sit right on the water. Both facts shape refrigerator and freezer repair here: how we plan the trip, and what tends to wear out. Refrigerators, freezers, ice makers and wine coolers are all on our list.
Getting a technician to the island
There’s one road on and off Fox Island, and reaching it from our side of the Sound means crossing the Tacoma Narrows first. That’s not a barrier, but it does mean a forgotten part costs more time here than it would in town.
A photo of the rating label and a short phone video of the problem, whether that’s the noise, the frost pattern or a flashing display, are worth more here than anywhere else we work. Send them when you book, along with a note about the driveway and any stairs down to the house.
What salt air does to refrigeration
Waterfront living is hard on anything with a condenser. Every time the condenser fan runs it pulls room air across the coils, and near the water that air carries moisture and salt. Over years the thin aluminum fins corrode, connections green over, and dust sticks to the damp surfaces and insulates the coils.
The early signs are a refrigerator that runs longer than it used to and a cabinet that feels warmer than normal. Cleaning the coils a couple of times a year helps a lot. If corrosion reaches the refrigerant tubing it can leak, which turns a maintenance issue into a sealed-system repair. That repair needs an EPA Section 608-certified technician and recovery equipment, and that is who we send.
Wine coolers in lower-level rooms and units in garages near the shoreline see the most exposure. Our wine cooler repair and freezer repair pages cover those.
Homes that sit empty for stretches
Some island homes are occupied only part of the year. A refrigerator left running in an empty house can fail without anyone noticing, and an ice maker left on with a slow leak can damage a floor. If you’re away often, shut off the ice maker supply and ask a neighbor to check after storms. An inexpensive remote thermometer in the freezer will tell you if it warmed up while you were gone, which is also useful information for us if something has failed. For a kitchen unit that isn’t cooling, see our refrigerator repair page.

Repair service in Fox Island: FAQ
Why is my wine cooler sweating on the outside?
Damp air condenses on any surface colder than the room, and a wine cooler's glass door and frame are colder than most. On humid days near the water a little moisture on the glass can be normal. Heavy beading around the door edge, or water running down onto the floor, usually means a door gasket isn't sealing or the unit's anti-condensation heater has failed. Both are repairable.
Can salt air really damage a refrigerator inside the house?
Over years, yes. Moist, salty air is drawn across the condenser coils every time the fan runs, and it slowly corrodes fins, tubing and electrical connections. Kitchens close to the water and units in garages or on porches are affected most. Keeping the coils clean helps. Corrosion that reaches the refrigerant tubing can cause a leak, which is a sealed-system repair.
Should I turn off my refrigerator when I leave the house for a few months?
You can, but do it properly. Empty it, close the ice maker's water valve, unplug it, dry it, and prop both doors open so mold doesn't grow. If you'd rather leave it running, set the ice maker to off, and ask someone to check on it after storms in case the power drops and the contents spoil.
