Thermador Freezer Repair

We repair Thermador freezer columns and the freezer sections of Thermador built-ins, with most calls coming down to defrost failures, door sealing or airflow across the evaporator. A built-in freezer is nearly always worth repairing.

Thermador freezer problems we see

  • Thick frost on the rear wall or around the door. Frost that keeps building means the defrost cycle is not clearing the evaporator, or humid air is getting past the gasket. The frost pattern usually tells us which.
  • Freezer column warm but still running. If the compressor runs and the freezer is warm, airflow is often the problem: an evaporator packed with ice, or a fan that has stopped. A sealed-system fault is less common.
  • Ice forming on the floor of the freezer. Water from the defrost cycle has to reach the drain. A drain that has frozen or clogged leaves that water to refreeze at the bottom of the compartment.
  • Door alarm sounding with the door closed. A door that drops slightly on its hinges, a heavy panel pulling it out of line, or a faulty door sensor can all trigger the alarm on a closed freezer door.
  • Food softening in baskets near the door. Uneven temperature in a freezer column usually comes from weak air circulation or a gasket leaking along one edge. Packages near the leak soften first.

The frost pattern inside a Thermador freezer is one of the best clues we have. Most calls involve frost, a freezer running warm or a door that will not seal properly, and each has a short list of likely causes. Thermador freezer repair centers on Freedom Collection freezer columns, the full-height freezers that often stand next to a matching refrigerator column, and on the freezer sections of Thermador’s full-size built-ins.

For the broader lineup, see the Thermador brand page. This page stays with freezers.

How a Thermador freezer column works

A freezer column is a self-contained appliance. It has its own compressor, condenser, evaporator and control, separate from the refrigerator column beside it. If the freezer warms and the refrigerator next to it is fine, the fault is inside the freezer column.

The defrost system

The evaporator sits behind a rear panel. Air from the compartment is pulled across it by a fan, and frost slowly collects on its fins. At intervals the control stops cooling and turns on a heater to melt that frost. A sensor ends the cycle once the coil is clear, and the water flows out through a drain to a pan where it evaporates.

Any break in that chain shows up as frost. A failed heater or sensor lets ice build until air can no longer pass through the coil. A drain that freezes or clogs leaves water inside to refreeze on the floor.

Doors and panels

Most Freedom columns are installed flush, often with a custom panel. That panel adds weight to the hinge side of the door, and over years a door can drop slightly out of line. On a freezer, even a small gap along one edge lets in enough humid air to frost the area around it and trigger the door alarm.

Installation and access

Freezer columns are fastened into the cabinetry so they cannot tip when the door is open and loaded. Reaching the drain pan, the rear wiring or the sealed system means releasing that fastening and sliding the column out of the opening. We plan for that, bring floor protection, and move it carefully.

What we check on a visit

We start by looking at the frost. Ice locked across the whole evaporator suggests the defrost system. Ice mainly at the bottom or in the drain trough suggests the drain. Frost on packages and around the door edge suggests a sealing problem.

Then:

  • Evaporator fan. Running, at speed, and not catching on ice.
  • Defrost components. We test the heater and sensor directly and run the defrost cycle through the service routine.
  • Condenser. Clean and getting enough air.
  • Door. Hinge alignment, gasket contact all the way around, and the door sensor.
  • Control. Any stored fault and how the components respond when run on command.

If the sealed system turns out to be at fault, that portion is handled only by a technician with EPA Section 608 certification.

What you can check first

  1. Make sure nothing inside, such as a basket, a bag or a tray, is stopping the door from closing.
  2. Look at the gasket on the hinge side and along the top. Flattened or torn sections are easy to see.
  3. Keep the ventilation grille clear.
  4. Note where the frost is and how quickly it returns.

Our guide to freezer frost buildup explains what is safe to do while you wait for a visit. Leave the rear panel in place; the defrost heater runs on line voltage.

Is Thermador freezer repair worth it?

Almost always. Defrost heaters, sensors, fans, gaskets and hinges are all contained repairs, and a built-in freezer column is fitted to its opening and panel. The only case where we stop and talk through replacement is a sealed-system failure on an older column. See our freezer repair page for how we handle freezers more broadly.

How a repair visit works

  1. Call or send a request

We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.

  2. Diagnosis in your home

A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.

  3. Written quote first

You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.

  4. Repair with OEM parts

Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Thermador freezer column keep frosting up?

There are two common reasons. Either moist air is getting in, through a gasket that has hardened or a door that is not closing square, or the defrost system has stopped clearing the evaporator. Frost on food and around the door edge points to the first. A solid block of ice behind the rear panel points to the second. We check both.

My freezer column's ice maker stopped. Is that a freezer problem?

Sometimes. The ice maker needs the freezer to be cold enough to freeze its mold, so a freezer running warm will slow or stop ice. If the freezer holds temperature and there is still no ice, the cause is on the ice side: water supply, filter, valve, fill tube or the ice maker itself. Our ice maker guide covers the safe checks.

Will pulling the freezer column out damage my cabinetry?

Not when it is done properly. The column is fastened in place to stop it tipping, so we release that fastening first, empty the baskets to cut the weight, protect the floor, and slide the column straight out without levering against the cabinets beside it. Many freezer repairs never need this step, because fans, controls, gaskets and hinges are reached from the front.
