FridgeRepair.pro is an independent repair service operated by Appliance Repair Pros. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Sub-Zero or Sub-Zero Group, Inc.. The Sub-Zero name and logo identify the equipment we repair.

Built-in refrigeration is the heart of the Sub-Zero lineup: Classic, Designer and PRO refrigerators, all-freezer and wine columns, undercounter units and ice makers. We diagnose and repair all of them, from decades-old built-ins to recent Designer columns, and most problems are fixable. Because the unit is built into cabinetry, Sub-Zero repair is generally a better path than a replacement that may not fit the opening.
Who makes Sub-Zero
Sub-Zero units are made by Sub-Zero Group, Inc., a family-owned company based in Madison, Wisconsin. The same company owns Wolf cooking appliances and Cove dishwashers. Refrigeration is its core business, and nearly everything it sells is meant to be built in.
That focus shows up in service. Sub-Zero designs its units to be repaired where they stand, and parts support for older built-ins has generally been better than it is for mass-market brands.
The Sub-Zero lineup
Classic series
The Classic series is the look most people picture: stainless or panel-ready doors, visible hinges and a grille across the top. It comes in side-by-side, over-and-under and French-door versions. That top grille hides the machine compartment, which matters for maintenance and diagnosis.
Designer series
Designer units are fully integrated, so custom panels cover the whole front and the unit disappears into the cabinetry. The range includes column refrigerators, freezers and wine units that can be installed side by side, plus over-and-under models and undercounter drawers.
PRO series
PRO models have a heavy stainless cabinet and a commercial look. The 48-inch PRO pairs a refrigerator and freezer and has been offered with a glass refrigerator door.
How Sub-Zero design affects repair
Dual refrigeration. Many full-size Sub-Zero built-ins use two separate sealed systems, one for fresh food and one for the freezer, each with its own compressor and evaporator. On a typical single-system refrigerator, the fresh-food side is cooled by air from the freezer. On a dual system, a warm refrigerator beside a cold freezer points to a different set of causes, and we test each side on its own.
Top-mounted condenser. On Classic built-ins the compressor and condenser sit above the doors. Dust, pet hair and cooking grease collect there unseen, and a clogged condenser is behind a lot of slow-cooling calls. Our condenser cleaning guide for built-ins shows what you can safely do yourself.
Built-in installation. These units are anchored to the cabinetry. Some repairs need the unit pulled forward, which means protecting the floor, managing the water line and re-securing the anti-tip anchors afterward. We tell you before we start if that is needed.
Problems we commonly see
- One compartment warm while the other is normal, from a fan, defrost or control fault on that side, or a sealed-system leak
- The compressor running constantly or sounding loud, often from a dirty condenser or a failing condenser fan
- Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor, usually a blocked defrost drain or a water-line issue
- Doors that no longer close or seal fully, from worn gaskets or tired hinge closers carrying heavy custom panels
- Ice makers that stop or make small, hollow cubes
- A blank display, flashing indicator or service message on the control panel
If your display shows a message or code, write it down exactly. It saves time on the first visit. For a broader look at cooling faults, see our built-in refrigerator repair page.
Finding the model and serial number
On full-size built-ins, look inside the refrigerator compartment near the top. If the rating plate is not there, check behind the top grille on Classic models. On undercounter and wine units, check the interior side walls and the area behind the lower grille. A phone photo of the plate is all we need.
Sub-Zero service in Bellevue and the Eastside
Sub-Zero built-ins are a common sight in the custom homes of Bellevue, Medina, Clyde Hill, Mercer Island and the Points communities of Hunts Point and Yarrow Point. We come to the home for every visit. Built-ins are repaired where they stand: the diagnosis, the part replacement and the testing all happen in the cabinetry, and we pull a unit from its opening only when a repair calls for it. Local details are on our Bellevue and Medina pages.
Service notes
Common Sub-Zero parts such as fans, valves, gaskets and control components are generally available within days, though some model-specific parts take longer. Sealed-system repairs go only to our EPA Section 608-certified technicians, who carry proper refrigerant recovery equipment. We give a written quote before any work begins, including whether the unit needs to come out of its opening.
Sub-Zero appliances we service
Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator repair
Classic, Designer and PRO built-ins in side-by-side, over-and-under, French-door and column layouts. On Classic models the condenser sits on top behind the grille, so a dusty grille is one of the first things we check when the unit runs warm.
Sub-Zero freezer repair
All-freezer columns and the freezer side of full-size built-ins. Many full-size models give the freezer its own sealed system, so a warm freezer next to a cold refrigerator tells us to focus on one system, not both.
Sub-Zero wine cooler repair
Full-height wine columns and undercounter wine storage with separate temperature zones. Typical calls involve one zone drifting off its setting, fogging on the glass door, or a fan that has become noisy.
Sub-Zero ice maker repair
Undercounter ice makers and the automatic ice makers inside built-in freezers. Slow or stopped production usually traces to the water supply, the fill valve or a clogged filter before it is a failed ice maker.
How a Sub-Zero repair visit works
Call or send a request
We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.
Diagnosis in your home
A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.
Written quote first
You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.
Repair with OEM parts
Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.
Sub-Zero repair FAQ
Is it worth repairing an older Sub-Zero refrigerator?
In most cases it is. Sub-Zero built-ins are designed to be serviced in place, and most failures involve fans, controls, defrost parts, water valves or door hardware rather than the whole unit. A replacement also has to fit an opening built around the old one, which can mean cabinet work. When a unit has a major sealed-system failure and is very old, we will say so plainly and help you compare the numbers.
Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator warm when the freezer is fine?
On many full-size Sub-Zero built-ins the refrigerator and freezer run on separate sealed systems, so one side can fail while the other keeps working normally. Common causes are a dirty condenser, a failed condenser or evaporator fan, a defrost problem on the refrigerator side, or a control fault. Before you call, note what the display shows and listen for the top compartment running.
How often should the condenser on a Sub-Zero be cleaned?
We suggest checking it at least twice a year, and more often if you have pets, a busy range nearby or a dusty remodel underway. On Classic built-ins the condenser is behind the top grille, so it collects lint and kitchen grease out of sight. A clogged condenser makes the compressor run longer and hotter, which shortens its life and can show up as a warm unit.
My Sub-Zero is still under warranty. Should I call you?
Check with Sub-Zero first. Work covered by the manufacturer's warranty goes through Sub-Zero's own service network, and paying an independent company could cost you coverage you already have. Sub-Zero's sealed-system coverage also runs well beyond the first couple of years, so read your warranty terms before paying anyone for compressor work. Once coverage has ended, we are glad to help.
