## Common freezer problems we fix

- **Freezer completely silent, light off:** Check the outlet before anything else. Garage outlets are often protected by a GFCI that trips without anyone noticing. If power is present at the outlet, the fault may be the cord, the thermostat or control, or the compressor start circuit.
- **Light on, compressor clicks but will not run:** A click every few minutes is the overload cutting out after a failed start. The start relay is the usual suspect, though a compressor that has seized produces the same sound.
- **Food soft, frost thick on the back wall of an upright:** On a frost-free upright this is a defrost failure: an open heater, a failed defrost thermostat or sensor, or a timer or control that never starts the cycle. Frost eventually blocks the evaporator and airflow stops.
- **Heavy ice on a chest freezer's walls and lid:** Manual-defrost chest freezers need defrosting by hand. Ice that builds fast, especially around the lid, usually means a gasket or hinge problem letting humid air in.
- **Freezer runs constantly but never gets cold enough:** A dirty condenser or dead condenser fan, a fan-forced evaporator that has stopped, a door that is not sealing, or a refrigerant leak. Frost covering only part of the evaporator suggests a leak.
- **Sides of a chest freezer hot to the touch:** Often normal. Many chest freezers use the outer walls as the condenser, so they shed heat through the cabinet. Only worry if the freezer is also failing to hold temperature.
- **Temperature alarm sounding:** Sometimes just a door left ajar after loading. If the alarm returns with the door shut, note the displayed temperature and any code before you call.

Freezer repair tends to be urgent, because a freezer full of meat, fish and batch-cooked meals is on a clock the moment it stops holding temperature. We repair upright, chest, built-in column and garage freezers in homes across Greater Seattle, from basic manual-defrost chests to frost-free uprights with electronic controls. The technician diagnoses on site, tells you what failed and what it will take to fix, and puts the quote in writing.

## First, protect what is inside

Before you call anyone, a few steps will buy time. Keep the lid or door closed. USDA guidance says a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours with the door shut, and a half-full one for about 24\. Every opening shortens that.

Then check power. Plenty of dead freezers in garages and basements have simply lost power at a tripped GFCI outlet or breaker. Press the reset button on the outlet, or on the GFCI upstream of it, and check the panel. If the freezer starts and runs normally, plan to watch it for a day, because a GFCI that trips repeatedly can point to a fault in the freezer’s wiring or defrost heater.

If you have a second freezer or coolers, move the most valuable items first. An appliance thermometer placed between packages will tell you more about what is safe than the freezer’s own display.

## How freezers work and fail, by type

### Chest freezers

Most chest freezers are manual-defrost. The cooling tubing is wrapped around the inner liner, so the walls themselves get cold, and on many models the condenser tubing is built into the outer walls. That is why a running chest freezer feels warm on the outside. It is shedding heat through its skin.

The failures tend to be simple or terminal. Thermostats, start relays and overloads are common and inexpensive to fix. Lid gaskets and hinges wear, letting in moist air that turns to heavy frost. The terminal failures are a refrigerant leak in tubing buried inside the walls, which cannot be reached without destroying the cabinet, and a puncture made by chipping ice with a sharp tool. Holes in the liner very often go straight into the evaporator tubing behind it.

### Frost-free uprights

A frost-free upright works like the freezer section of a refrigerator: an evaporator coil behind a rear panel, a fan blowing air across it, and a defrost system that melts the frost on a schedule. Defrost failures are the classic fault on these, and they show up the same way each time, with a slow loss of temperature and a thick layer of frost on the back panel.

Uprights also get opened more than chests, and cold air spills out the bottom every time. Gaskets on uprights wear faster as a result, and a door that does not quite latch can frost up a whole shelf in a day.

### Manual-defrost uprights

Some uprights skip the fan and defrost heater entirely and put the cooling coils inside the shelves. They are quiet and efficient, but frost builds on the shelves and has to be defrosted by hand. Faults are mostly electrical: thermostat, start components, or the compressor itself.

### Freezer columns and built-in freezers

Freezer columns and built-in freezer drawers are high-end appliances with their own fans, defrost systems, ice makers and electronic controls. They are serviced in place, and repair is almost always worth it. Our [built-in refrigerator repair page](https://fridgerepair.pro/built-in-refrigerator-repair/) explains how we handle units fitted into cabinetry.

## Garage and basement freezers

A lot of the region’s second freezers live in garages, and garages are hard on them. Each model is designed for a range of room temperatures, listed in the manual. An unheated garage in a cold snap can fall below it, and a closed garage facing the afternoon sun can climb well above it in July. Models sold as garage-ready are designed for a wider range.

Garages bring other problems too. Sawdust and lint from a workshop or dryer clog condensers quickly. Mice like the warmth of the compressor compartment and will chew wiring and insulation. And many garage outlets are GFCI-protected, which is good for safety but means a nuisance trip can quietly shut the freezer off for days.

A wireless temperature alarm that sends an alert to your phone costs little compared with a freezer full of food. For a garage freezer, it is one of the most useful things you can add.

## What we check on a freezer call

1. **Power supply.** Outlet voltage, the cord and plug, and whether an extension cord is involved. Manufacturers generally advise plugging freezers straight into a wall outlet.
2. **Compressor and start circuit.** Whether the compressor starts, runs and stays running, and the condition of the relay and overload.
3. **Condenser.** Coil condition and the condenser fan on uprights, wall temperatures on chest models.
4. **Control.** Whether the thermostat or electronic control is calling for cooling when it should, and whether the sensors read correctly.
5. **Evaporator.** Frost pattern and, on frost-free models, the fan and every part of the defrost circuit.
6. **Seals.** Door or lid gasket contact all the way around, hinge wear, and whether the cabinet is level enough to close by itself.
7. **Sealed system.** If the electrical side checks out and the frost pattern points to a refrigerant problem, we look for the leak or restriction. Only EPA Section 608-certified technicians open the refrigerant circuit.

## Repair or replace a freezer

The decision usually comes down to two things: which part failed, and what kind of freezer it is.

| Freezer type | Usually worth repairing | Usually not |
| --------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| Basic chest freezer | Thermostat, start relay, lid gasket | Leak in wall tubing, compressor, punctured liner |
| Frost-free upright | Defrost parts, fans, controls, gaskets | Sealed-system failure on an older, low-cost model |
| Freezer column or built-in drawer | Nearly every repair, including sealed system | A discontinued control with no substitute |

Energy use is part of the math as well. An older freezer can use considerably more electricity than a current model of the same size, so if yours is old and needs a major repair, replacement may pay back part of its cost over time.

## Keeping a freezer healthy

- **Keep it reasonably full.** Frozen food holds cold during door openings and outages. Jugs of water fill empty space well.
- **Defrost manual models before the frost gets thick.** About a quarter inch is the usual point. Melt it, never chip it.
- **Clean the condenser on uprights** once or twice a year, with the freezer unplugged. On chest freezers, keep the clearance the manual asks for around the walls so they can release heat.
- **Check the gasket.** A dollar bill closed in the door or lid should drag when you pull it. If it slides out freely, that section is leaking.
- **Keep an eye on the temperature.** A freezer thermometer inside, or a remote alarm, catches a failing freezer while the food is still frozen.

## Freezer repair FAQ

### Can I refreeze food after my freezer has partly thawed?

USDA guidance says food that still has ice crystals, or that has stayed at 40°F or below, can be refrozen safely, though texture may suffer. Check with a food thermometer rather than by feel. Anything that has been above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded. Keeping the door closed while you wait for a repair buys the most time.

### Is it worth repairing an inexpensive chest freezer?

It depends on the fault. A start relay or a thermostat is a modest repair and worth doing on a freezer in good condition. A leak in the condenser tubing built into the walls, or a failed compressor, usually costs more than a basic chest freezer is worth. We will tell you which category yours falls into before you spend anything beyond the diagnostic.

### Why does my garage freezer stop working in winter?

Every freezer has a range of room temperatures it is designed for, and an unheated garage can fall below it. Cold thickens compressor oil and can confuse the controls on some frost-free models. Also check the outlet: garage outlets are often GFCI-protected and can trip without anyone noticing. The manual lists the supported range, and some models are sold as garage-ready.

### How often should a manual-defrost freezer be defrosted?

When the frost is about a quarter inch thick, or at least once a year. Thick frost insulates the cooling surfaces, so the freezer runs longer and holds temperature less well. Unplug it, move the food to coolers, and let the ice melt or speed it up with a pan of hot water inside. Never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver.

## What it costs to start

The in-home diagnostic is **$149**. If you go ahead with the repair, that amount is credited toward it. You get a written quote before any work begins, and every completed repair carries a parts and labor warranty.
