## Thermador built-in refrigerator problems we see

- **Refrigerator column warm, freezer column fine:** Each Freedom column is a separate appliance with its own compressor and controls. A warm refrigerator column next to a cold freezer column rules out shared causes like power and points to that one column.
- **Long run times and warm air at the grille:** When the condenser cannot shed heat, the compressor runs longer and the unit struggles to recover after door openings. Dust, pet hair and blocked grille airflow are the common causes.
- **Door sagging or not closing evenly:** A tall panel-ready door carries a lot of weight on its hinges. Over time it can drop out of line with the cabinet, which breaks the gasket seal along one edge.
- **Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor:** A drain line that is frozen or clogged sends defrost water into the bottom of the compartment. On models with water, a supply connection or filter housing leak can look similar.
- **Controls unresponsive or showing an alert:** Touch controls that freeze, lose settings or show a persistent alert can trace to the control board, the display, a sensor or a connector. We read the fault through the service routine.

In a row of Thermador columns, each one is a self-contained appliance: refrigerator, freezer or wine, installed alone or side by side. So Thermador built-in refrigerator repair starts with working out which column, or which part of a full-size unit, is at fault. Thermador also makes full-size built-in models that combine refrigerator and freezer in one cabinet.

The [Thermador brand page](https://fridgerepair.pro/brands/thermador/) covers the brand itself. This page is about diagnosing and repairing the refrigerators.

## How Thermador built-ins are designed

### Freedom Collection columns

Each column has its own compressor, condenser, evaporator, fans and electronic control. Two columns side by side look like one refrigerator but behave like two. That is helpful when one goes warm, because it immediately tells us the fault is inside that column rather than in household power or the surrounding installation.

Columns are installed flush with the cabinetry, usually with custom panels or Thermador’s own stainless door panels. The panel hangs on the column’s door, so hinge condition and door alignment matter more than they would on a freestanding refrigerator.

### Full-size built-ins

Full-size Thermador built-ins combine fresh-food and freezer sections in one cabinet. They are fitted into an opening the same way columns are, with anti-tip fastening and a grille for ventilation.

### Ventilation through the grille

Built-ins cannot breathe from the back the way freestanding refrigerators do. They depend on air moving through the front grille and across the condenser. A grille blocked by a rug, a trim piece or years of dust shows up as long run times and slow recovery.

## What we check on a Thermador visit

We measure the temperature in each compartment with our own probes and compare it with the display. A display that reads correctly and a compartment that is truly warm is a cooling problem. A display that disagrees with the probe is a sensor or control question.

From there we work in order:

- **Condenser and condenser fan.** Is heat leaving the unit?
- **Evaporator and evaporator fan.** Is cold air reaching the compartment, and is the evaporator clear of ice?
- **Defrost.** Is the heater working, and does the cycle finish?
- **Door and gasket.** Is the door hanging square, and does the gasket seal on all four sides?
- **Control.** What does the service routine report, and do the components respond when run directly?

If the column has to come out for rear access or sealed-system work, we release the anti-tip fastening and slide it forward with the floor protected. Any refrigerant work is done by a technician with EPA Section 608 certification.

## What you can check before calling

1. Confirm the breaker is on and the display shows normal settings.
2. Clear anything blocking the grille and make sure the doors close on their own.
3. Look at the gasket along the hinge side and the top of each door. Gaps often show there first, and our [door gasket guide](https://fridgerepair.pro/guides/refrigerator-door-gasket-replacement/) shows what a failing gasket looks like.
4. If the app or display shows an alert, write it down exactly.

Avoid pulling the column out yourself. Built-ins are heavy, top-heavy when loaded, and fastened to the cabinetry.

## Thermador built-in refrigerator repair or replacement

Repair is usually the right call. Replacing a column means matching the opening, rehanging or remaking panels, and sometimes adjusting cabinetry. Thermador shares its parent company with [Gaggenau](https://fridgerepair.pro/brands/gaggenau/) and Bosch, and we see many of the same kinds of failures across those built-ins: fans, sensors, controls and door hardware. Those repairs are well within reason on a unit of this price.

## How a repair visit works

1. **Call or send a request:** We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.
2. **Diagnosis in your home:** A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.
3. **Written quote first:** You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.
4. **Repair with OEM parts:** Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are Thermador refrigerator and freezer columns repaired separately?

They are. A Freedom refrigerator column and a freezer column installed side by side are two independent appliances with their own cooling systems and controls. That makes diagnosis cleaner, because a fault in one does not usually involve the other. It also means a repair on one column does not require taking the pair apart, unless the installation hardware joins them.

### Does the Home Connect app help with repairs?

It can be useful for spotting a door left open or a setting that was changed, and some alerts show up there before you notice them at the unit. It does not replace a diagnosis. When you call, tell us what the app or the display shows, and we will read the fault directly from the control on site.

### Why does my Thermador built-in run all the time?

Constant running usually means the refrigerator cannot get rid of heat or cannot keep heat out. A dusty condenser, a blocked grille, a door seal leaking along one edge, or a fan that has slowed are the common causes. Less often it is a sealed-system problem. Cleaning the condenser is a safe first step before you call.

### Is it worth repairing a Thermador column instead of replacing it?

Most of the time, yes. Columns are installed into cabinetry built around their dimensions, with custom panels and trim. Fans, sensors, controls, gaskets and hinges are all reasonable repairs. If the sealed system has failed on an older column, we lay out the cost against replacement, including what replacement means for the panels.
