This page covers the LG-branded refrigerators most households own. ## How LG refrigerators are built ### Linear and inverter compressors Many LG refrigerators use a linear compressor, where a magnet drives the piston straight back and forth instead of through a crankshaft. It is quiet and efficient. When one weakens, though, the symptoms are subtle: the unit may hum along normally while temperatures creep up over days. We confirm a compressor fault with measurements of the sealed system before recommending anything that expensive. ### The door ice maker On French-door models the main ice maker lives in the upper part of the left fresh-food door. Freezer air is ducted to it through the cabinet and into the door. That design saves freezer space, but it gives humid air several places to sneak in, and moisture turns into frost around the ice bin and dispenser chute. ### Electronic controls Temperature sensors, a main control board and, on inverter models, a compressor drive board all work together. A flashing display or a code on the panel means the board has logged something. If shelves or bins hide it, look lower down near the crisper drawers. On most LG models the fresh-food section is cooled by air moved from the freezer side, so anything that blocks that airflow warms the refrigerator first. The usual causes are an evaporator iced over by a defrost failure, a fan that has stopped or is hitting ice, or a weak compressor. A freezer that feels cold to your hand can still be well above its setting, so a thermometer reading helps when you call. ### Why does ice keep building up in my LG door ice maker? The door ice maker on French-door models is cooled by freezer air carried up through the cabinet. Warm, humid kitchen air that gets past the ice compartment's seal or the door gasket condenses and freezes, and over time it jams the bin and auger. Clearing the ice treats the symptom. A lasting repair means finding where the moisture is getting in or why the compartment is over-cooling. ### Can you repair an LG linear compressor? We diagnose it by measuring how the sealed system performs, not by listening to it. If the compressor has failed, the replacement is sealed-system work, and our EPA Section 608-certified technicians handle it. LG has often warrantied its compressors for longer than the rest of the refrigerator, so check your paperwork first.
