# Kenmore Refrigerator Repair

Kenmore refrigerators are built by other manufacturers, and the three digits before the dot in the model number tell us which one. We use that to diagnose the unit the way its maker designed it, then quote the repair before any work starts.

- $149 diagnostic, credited to the repair
- Licensed, trained & insured
- Parts & labor warranty
- OEM parts

## Kenmore refrigerator problems we see

- **Both compartments slowly warming:** A dusty condenser or a failing condenser fan lets both sections drift warm together. If the condenser is clean and the fan runs, we move on to the compressor and its start or drive components.
- **Fresh-food section warm, freezer fine:** Depending on the maker, this points to a frosted evaporator, a stopped evaporator fan, or an air damper stuck closed between the compartments.
- **Ice building up in the door on LG-built models:** Kenmore refrigerators with a 795 prefix were built by LG, and French-door versions with an ice compartment in the fresh-food door can show the same freeze-ups as LG's own models: a frozen bucket, a jammed auger or ice around the compartment fan.
- **Water on the floor or under the freezer drawer:** Common sources are a clogged or frozen defrost drain, a cracked plastic water line, or a leaking inlet valve at the back of the cabinet.
- **Clicking with no cooling:** A click every few minutes and no compressor hum often means a failed start relay or overload, or a compressor that won't start. On LG-built units with a linear compressor, the diagnosis goes through the inverter drive instead.
- **Control panel won't respond:** Many electronic Kenmore panels have a lock feature, so check that first. If the panel is unlocked and still ignores you, the display board, main board or the wiring between them is next.

The model number printed inside the fresh-food compartment of a Kenmore refrigerator starts with three digits and a dot, and those digits identify the manufacturer that built it under contract. Once we know the maker, Kenmore refrigerator repair is a matter of diagnosing the unit as the platform it really is, with that maker’s controls, layout and parts.

## Reading the model number prefix

These are common Kenmore prefixes and the manufacturers they belong to:

| Prefix (before the dot) | Built by |
| ----------------------- | ----------------------- |
| 795 | LG |
| 106 | Whirlpool |
| 253 | Frigidaire / Electrolux |

If your number starts with something else, read the full model number to us when you call and we’ll identify it. Kenmore Elite models follow the same convention, so the prefix matters just as much on the higher-end units.

## Why the maker changes the diagnosis

Two Kenmore refrigerators that look alike on the showroom floor can be very different inside. The prefix tells us how cold air is made and routed, what kind of compressor drive is used, and where the ice maker lives.

### LG-built (795)

Many LG-built Kenmore refrigerators use LG’s linear compressor, which is driven by an inverter board rather than a simple start relay. A no-cool complaint on one of these means testing the drive and compressor together. French-door versions often carry the ice maker in the fresh-food door. Our [LG refrigerator repair page](https://fridgerepair.pro/brands/lg/refrigerator-repair/) explains how that platform behaves.

### Whirlpool-built (106)

Whirlpool-built Kenmores include plenty of side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer units. The parts we test first are the evaporator fan, the defrost heater and thermostat, the ice maker and the water inlet valve. Older units with mechanical controls are some of the simpler refrigerators to diagnose.

### Frigidaire-built (253)

Electrolux-built Kenmores show up often as top-freezer and side-by-side models. Many use an air damper to meter cold air from the freezer into the fresh-food side, so a damper stuck closed gives you a warm refrigerator, a cold freezer, and no frost problem at all.

### Other prefixes

Kenmore has used other suppliers over the years, and those units carry their own prefixes. We identify the maker from the full model number before ordering anything, because the test points and parts follow the original manufacturer’s design.

## Kenmore refrigerator repair: what a visit looks like

We confirm the model, prefix and approximate age, then measure both compartments and listen to what’s running. Next comes the condenser and its fan, the evaporator area for frost, the fans, the controls and, on ice and water models, the supply side. When we find the fault, we show you what failed and quote the repair in writing.

Many Kenmore parts match the maker’s own components, which helps when a Kenmore-labeled part is scarce. We confirm compatibility against your exact model before installing anything.

## Before you call

- **Write down the full model and serial number.** It saves time and lets us bring the right parts sooner.
- **Check the condenser.** Unplug the refrigerator, remove the base grille if it lifts off, and vacuum the dust you can reach.
- **Look at the controls.** On older units with dials, the fresh-food control is easy to bump while loading groceries.
- **Listen for the freezer fan.** On many models the fan stops when the freezer door opens. Press the door switch with the door open and listen for it to start.
- **Stop any leak.** If water is reaching the floor, close the supply valve behind or under the refrigerator.

## Is an older Kenmore worth fixing?

It depends on age and what failed. Fans, defrost parts, thermostats, damper controls and inlet valves cost little enough to make sense on almost any sound cabinet. A failed compressor or sealed-system leak on a refrigerator that’s 15 years old usually doesn’t, and we’ll say so. Our [repair or replace guide](https://fridgerepair.pro/guides/repair-or-replace-refrigerator/) lays out the trade-offs, and the [Kenmore brand page](https://fridgerepair.pro/brands/kenmore/) covers the rest of the lineup.

## How a repair visit works

1. **Call or send a request:** We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.
2. **Diagnosis in your home:** A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.
3. **Written quote first:** You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.
4. **Repair with OEM parts:** Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do I find the model number on my Kenmore refrigerator?

Look for a label on an inside wall of the fresh-food compartment, usually near the top, or on the ceiling of the compartment. The model number starts with three digits, a dot, and then more digits. Read us the whole thing, plus the serial number, when you call. The prefix tells us the maker and the rest tells us the exact platform.

### Can you still get parts for an older Kenmore refrigerator?

Usually. Many Kenmore parts are the same components the original manufacturer used in its own models, so knowing the maker opens up more options. Some older or discontinued parts are hard to find, and if that's the case for your repair we'll tell you before you commit to anything, rather than after the refrigerator is apart.

### My Kenmore model number starts with 795\. Does that matter?

It does. A 795 prefix means LG built the refrigerator, so it shares LG's design approach: electronic controls, often a linear compressor driven by an inverter board, and on many French-door models an ice compartment in the fresh-food door. We diagnose it the way we would an LG of the same era, which changes the tests and the parts involved.

### Is a Kenmore Elite repaired differently from a regular Kenmore?

The approach is the same. Kenmore Elite refrigerators also carry a maker prefix before the dot, and we diagnose them according to the platform underneath. Elite models tend to have more features, such as more elaborate dispensers and electronic controls, which can mean more components to test, but the logic of finding the failed part doesn't change.
