# Kenmore Freezer Repair

We repair Kenmore upright and chest freezers. The model prefix tells us who built the unit, and knowing whether it is manual-defrost or frost-free tells us whether heavy frost means a seal problem or a failed part.

- $149 diagnostic, credited to the repair
- Licensed, trained & insured
- Parts & labor warranty
- OEM parts
- Mon–Sun, 8 AM – 8 PM

## Kenmore freezer problems we see

- **Thick frost around the top of a chest freezer:** Frost concentrated near the lid almost always means humid air is getting in, through a torn lid gasket or a hinge that no longer holds the lid flat against the cabinet.
- **Frost-free upright warming, ice behind the rear panel:** When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control fails, the evaporator ices over. The compressor keeps running, but air stops moving through the coil.
- **Cabinet sides hotter than usual:** Warm sides are normal on many chest freezers because the condenser tubing runs inside the outer walls. Sides that are suddenly hotter while the inside warms point to a sealed-system or compressor problem.
- **Compressor clicks but won't run:** A repeating click with no steady hum usually means the start relay or overload has failed, or the compressor itself can't start. We test them in that order.
- **Freezer runs constantly and still isn't cold enough:** Check the door or lid seal and the space around the cabinet first. If those are fine, a dirty condenser on an upright, a weak compressor or a refrigerant leak is next.
- **Water under a chest freezer:** Many chest freezers have a defrost drain plug at the bottom. If it was left loose after the last defrost, it can drip. Condensation from a poor lid seal can also run down the cabinet.

Two facts decide where Kenmore freezer repair begins: which company built the freezer, and whether it defrosts itself. Kenmore upright and chest freezers are made by other companies and identified by the prefix before the dot in the model number, and the defrost type tells us whether a frosting or warming problem is a seal issue or a failed part.

## Who built your Kenmore freezer

Read the three digits before the dot in the model number. Many Kenmore chest and upright freezers carry a 253 prefix, which means Frigidaire/Electrolux built them. If you see a different prefix, read it to us and we’ll identify the maker. The rating label may be inside the lid, on an inside wall near the top, or on the back of the cabinet, depending on the unit.

Our [Kenmore refrigerator page](https://fridgerepair.pro/brands/kenmore/refrigerator-repair/) has a fuller table of prefixes. For freezers, the maker matters mostly for controls, defrost parts and the availability of replacement components.

## Manual-defrost versus frost-free

### Chest freezers and manual-defrost uprights

These have no defrost heater. The evaporator tubing is wrapped around the inner walls of a chest freezer, or built into the shelves of a manual upright, and frost forms on those surfaces slowly by design until you defrost the unit. If frost is building fast, the question is where the moist air is coming from: the lid or door gasket, a sprung hinge, or a lot of opening and closing.

Many chest freezers also use a skin condenser, with tubing inside the outer cabinet walls that sheds heat through the metal. That’s why the sides feel warm. It also means the condenser can’t be cleaned or easily replaced, and a leak in that tubing is usually not worth repairing.

### Frost-free uprights

A frost-free upright works like the freezer half of a refrigerator. There’s an evaporator behind a panel, a fan that circulates air across it, and a heater that melts the frost on a schedule. When the defrost system fails, ice packs the coil, airflow drops, and the freezer warms even though the compressor runs all day. Our [freezer frost buildup guide](https://fridgerepair.pro/guides/freezer-frost-buildup/) shows what normal and abnormal frost look like.

## Kenmore freezer repair: what we check

We start by measuring the cabinet temperature and checking how the food has held up. Then we work through the parts in a logical order:

- **Compressor and start components.** We confirm the compressor starts and runs, and test the start relay and overload if it doesn’t.
- **Condenser.** On uprights with a coil underneath or at the back, we check for dust and confirm the condenser fan runs, where there is one.
- **Door or lid seal and hinges.** We look for gaps, tears and hinges that let the lid or door sit crooked.
- **Frost pattern.** Frost on the food and walls tells a different story from ice hidden behind a rear panel.
- **Defrost system.** On frost-free uprights, we test the heater, defrost thermostat and control.
- **Thermostat or control.** We compare what it’s set to with what the cabinet is actually doing.

Sealed-system diagnosis comes last, after the simpler causes are ruled out. If refrigerant work is needed, it is carried out only by EPA Section 608-certified technicians.

## Checks before you call

- **Confirm power.** Plug a lamp into the same outlet. Garage and basement outlets are often GFCI-protected and can trip quietly.
- **Check the thermostat.** Make sure the dial or setting hasn’t been turned toward the warm end.
- **Test the seal.** Close the lid or door on a sheet of paper in several spots. If it slides out freely, the gasket isn’t sealing there.
- **Close the drain plug.** On a chest freezer, make sure the drain plug is seated after any defrost.
- **Leave room around it.** Boxes stacked against a chest freezer’s walls trap the heat it’s trying to release.
- **Protect the food.** Keep the lid closed and move items to another freezer or a cooler with ice if the cabinet is warming.

## Repair or replace?

Thermostats, start relays, defrost parts, fans, gaskets and hinges are straightforward repairs, and they’re usually worth it. A compressor replacement or a skin-condenser leak on an older chest freezer usually isn’t. A new chest freezer is often the better buy, and we’ll tell you that instead of selling you a sealed-system job. ## How a repair visit works

1. **Call or send a request:** We reply within one business hour. We ask what the appliance is doing, the brand and, if handy, the model number from the label inside the door.
2. **Diagnosis in your home:** A technician tests the system and finds the actual fault. The visit is $149.
3. **Written quote first:** You get the price before any work starts. Go ahead and the $149 is credited toward the repair.
4. **Repair with OEM parts:** Common parts are often on the truck. If one has to be ordered, we book the return visit when it arrives. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why are the sides of my Kenmore chest freezer hot?

Many chest freezers use a skin condenser: refrigerant tubing fastened to the inside of the outer cabinet walls. The heat removed from the food leaves through those walls, so warm sides while the compressor runs are normal. What isn't normal is a sudden change, such as sides that become much hotter, or that go cold while the inside warms. Either change is worth a service call.

### How do I know if my Kenmore upright freezer is frost-free?

Look inside. If the shelves are wire racks and the walls are smooth with a panel at the back, it's almost certainly frost-free, with the evaporator hidden behind that panel. If the shelves themselves are made of cold metal tubing and frost forms on them, it's a manual-defrost model. The owner's manual and the model number will confirm it.

### My chest freezer runs but isn't cold. Can it be fixed?

Sometimes. A failed thermostat or start relay is an easy, worthwhile repair. If the compressor runs but the cabinet stays warm, the sealed system may have lost refrigerant, and on a chest freezer with a skin condenser a leak in the wall tubing usually isn't economical to repair. We'll test it, tell you which case you're in, and recommend replacement if that's the better deal.

### Can a Kenmore freezer be kept in the garage?

Many people do, and plenty of freezers handle a garage well. Check the owner's manual for the ambient temperature range your model is rated for. Keep it out of direct sun, leave space around it for airflow, and make sure the outlet isn't a GFCI that trips on damp days without anyone noticing. A tripped outlet is a common reason a garage freezer stops.
